What is an Alternator?
The alternator is one of the most important parts of your car's electrical system. It's responsible for generating the power that keeps your battery charged and powers all the electronic accessories in your vehicle.
How Alternators Work
Alternators are belt-driven devices that use engine power to generate electricity. The generated electricity is used to charge the battery and power the electrical accessories while the engine runs. Once the engine is turned off, the battery provides power to accessories, like the stereo and lights, until it needs to be recharged.
The alternator has a pulley that is turned by a drive belt connected to the engine. Inside the alternator, a coil of wire spins around a metal core when the pulley is turned. This generates a magnetic field. As electrons flow through the coil, they interact with the magnetic field and create electricity.
